- About APS
International Committee
PURPOSE: The International Committee: (1) represents the interests of non-U.S. APS members throughout the society; (2) ensures that international members are able to take full advantage of the Society’s offerings; (3) facilitates the participation of international members in the Society meetings and leadership; and (4) help forge deeper relationships with other physiology societies around the world
MEETINGS: The committee meets no less than once annually. Meetings may be conducted either in-person or electronically
The committee is composed of six or more members, the majority of whom should reside outside the United States, and one trainee member of the Society. The Committee should represent broad geographical diversity, preferably with members from several continents. The chair of the committee will be selected by the Committee on Committees and approved by Council. Whenever possible, the chair should reside outside the U.S. A councilor liaison serves as an ex officio member and the chief science officer of the Society serves as staff liaison.
- Develop initiatives to enhance the role of APS within the international scientific community.
- Communicate and confer with the international members of APS to ensure that the Society meets their membership needs.
- Work with staff to develop strategies to expand the global membership of APS.
- Work with the Council, executive director and chief science officer to establish communication between the APS and other physiological societies and their individual members.
- Work with the Conference Committee to act as a clearinghouse for requests from international societies for joint meetings and workshops or other types of support.
- Work with Council, the Section Advisory Committee and staff to ensure that the interests of non-US members are represented appropriately throughout the Society.
- Work with staff and Council to build deeper relationships with other physiological societies around the world, helping to develop programs to increase engagement, including joint memberships when appropriate.
- Review applications for the International Early Career Physiologist Travel Award and select awardees.
- Work with the Committee on Committees to appoint international members to serve on APS Committees.
- Submit a written annual report to Council at their spring meeting, as part of the consent agenda, providing activities from the previous 12 months. The report will be due three weeks ahead of the meeting.
