Career Opportunities in Physiology Committee

PURPOSE: The Career Opportunities in Physiology Committee (COPC) promotes interest in careers in physiology, highlights the diversity of careers available to physiologists and develops professional development and leadership training resources and programs designed to equip members for professional success, regardless of their employment sector.

MEETINGS: The committee meets at twice annually. Meetings may be conducted either in-person or virtually, depending on need. Other work of the committee may be conducted electronically  

COMPOSITION:

The COPC is composed of at least eight members, consisting of a diverse group of experienced professionals, with at least one early career member, one student and one post-doctoral trainee. The chair is appointed by the Committee on Committees with approval by the Council. The Physiologists in Industry Committee appoints non-voting liaisons to the Committee. The director of careers and professional development serves as staff liaison to the committee.

DUTIES:
  • Advise staff on developing and updating outreach material related to career opportunities in the physiology and related disciplines.
  • Organize career and professional development workshops, training courses and other professional development activities for graduate students, postdoctoral trainees and early career professionals.
  • Conduct research on career sectors employing APS members.
  • Gather information about the current demand for and the suitability of the training of physiologists and collaborate on career development activities for physiologists at all levels, working with potential employers and other appropriate partners
  • Serve as a resource for current information regarding career options in physiology.  
  • Organize the mentoring symposium at the APS annual meeting.
  • Organize the career symposium at the APS annual meeting.
  • Submit a written annual report to Council at their spring meeting, as part of the consent agenda, providing activities from the previous 12 months. The report will be due three weeks ahead of the meeting.
