Symposium Abstract: In this symposium titled “Staying Organized” sponsored by the Career Opportunities in Physiology Committee, we will focus on a variety of topics. Topics to be covered include: 1) staying organized in laboratory management; 2) staying organized in personal productivity; 3) staying organized in grant management. Speakers have direct knowledge of the topic, followed by a question and answer session. These sessions will provide the importance of staying organized in all facets of your career.

Navigating the job market and the first months/years of a new job can be a complicated and intimidating process. The goal of this symposium was to provide participants with a brief overview of important tips and considerations on the following topics: (1) Finding A Job: When, Where & What (2) Negotiating for a Position: Offer Letters. Speakers have direct knowledge of the topic, followed by a questions and answer session. These sessions will provide important insights into the job hunt process, from start to finish, with pointers for how to navigate difficult issues once the position commences.

The purpose of this career symposium is to provide resources and tools to identify and develop skills that are not a common aspect of training. Presentations cover a range of topics including keys to making a successful transition in the pharmaceutical industry and in the military, understanding what skills are needed to manage a diverse group of individuals and how to ensure you’re managing or mentoring in a way that enables success for everyone, individually and as a team and figuring out what you don’t know and how to get help learning it.
