Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee

PURPOSE: The purpose of the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee is to promote and encourage diversity and inclusion within the APS member community and the discipline of physiology. The committee is charged with ensuring that the Society continuously strives to create an environment in which all individuals are encouraged to join, thrive and lead, regardless of race, color, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or marital status.

MEETINGS: The committee meets twice annually. Meetings may be conducted either in-person or virtually, depending on need. Other work of the committee may be conducted electronically  

COMPOSITION:

This Committee is composed of at least seven members of the Society, including a trainee member who is a second-year Porter Fellow at the time of the appointment. The director of member communities serves as the staff liaison to the committee.

DUTIES:
  • Establish and maintain diversity and inclusion as fundamental principles of APS.  
  • Propose appropriate goals for diversity, inclusion and equity in APS membership, participation, programming and metrics for measuring success.
  • Advise and coordinate with the council and other committees, taskforces and sections on strategies to meet diversity goals and needs.
  • Manage the Porter Physiology Development Program and select Porter Fellows. Develop pathways for Porter Fellows to become future Society leaders.
  • Select Martin Frank Diversity Travel Award recipients. 
  • Coordinate career development activities for underrepresented communities within the APS membership. 
  • Develop new programs to promote and support diversity in physiology. 
  • Submit a written annual report to Council at their spring meeting, as part of the consent agenda, providing activities from the previous 12 months. The report will be due three weeks ahead of the meeting.
