Conference Committee

PURPOSE: The Conference Committee is responsible for developing a conference program that: (1) advances the frontiers of physiology; (2) helps define the future of physiological sciences; (3) cross-fertilizes research at the boundaries of physiology; and (4) provides venues to nurture the careers of early career physiologists.

MEETINGS: The committee meets twice annually. Meetings may be conducted either in-person or virtually, depending on need. Other work of the committee may be conducted electronically  

COMPOSITION:

The committee is comprised of eight or more regular members of the Society. The chair is appointed by the Committee on Committees with approval by the Council. The director of scientific meetings serves as staff liaison to the committee.

DUTIES:
  • Assess emerging scientific trends and determine areas of significant interest for APS members and impact for the discipline of physiology.  
  • Identify conference topics that support the purpose of the committee and the strategic plan and goals of the Society.
  • Oversee the development of high impact, recurring conferences that will appeal to a broad enough audience to cover conference expenses and advance the science.
  • Ensure scientific quality, timeliness and importance of conference topics.
  • Promote and ensure inclusion of underrepresented groups, as well as opportunities for trainee in each conference. 
  • Ensure that the conference program is executed in a cost effective way that supports good stewardship of the Society’s resources. 
  • Submit a written annual report to Council at their spring meeting, as part of the consent agenda, providing activities from the previous 12 months. The report will be due three weeks ahead of the meeting.
