Purpose: To recognize the chapter that best fulfills the mission of the American Physiological Society (APS) to provide excellent service in promoting physiology research, education, and outreach.
Award and Recognition: The winning chapter will receive: $1,000, a plaque and an award toolkit to display the award. The toolkit includes thumbnail images and other resources that may be displayed on the chapter’s website, social media and, which can be included in any written correspondence. The Physiology Chapter of the Year will also be recognized during the American Physiology Summit each year with a mixer or special event and via APS member publications.
Criteria: In the statement of qualifications document, chapters will provide a narrative of their contributions to the mission of promoting physiology research, education, and outreach within their jurisdiction over the current year. A sustained contribution of the chapter over several years can be emphasized.
For consideration for the APS Chapter of the Year Award, candidates must meet these prerequisites:
- All chapters with an approved APS affiliation agreement are eligible to apply. Chapters that receive the award are not eligible to apply the following year.
- Chapters will document in the statement of qualifications document a narrative of their contributions to the mission of promoting physiology research, education, and outreach within their jurisdiction over the current year. Examples may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- sponsors research events, seminars, etc.;
- facilitates collaborative grants made through chapter members;
- sponsors physiology research recognitions and awards;
- documented promotion of APS research activities, awards and resources; and
- other chapter led research activities.
- provides chapter assistance with curricula;
- sponsors chapter educational events;
- documents outcomes from activities in career development and resources;
- documents outcomes from chapter lead K-12 outreach;
- documents promotion of APS education activities, awards, and resources; and
- other chapter led educational activities.
- develops and/or maintains chapter programs for public education on physiology and pathophysiology;
- develops and/or maintains chapter outreach to undergraduate and K-12 education;
- develops and/or maintains chapter programs to promote physiology at institutional and governmental levels;
- develops and/or maintains chapter outreach to other medical science disciplines in the chapter region;
- develops and/or maintains organized mentoring for career development; and
- documented promotion of chapter membership and evidence of growth.
- promotes innovative fund raising activities for the chapter;
- develops new or sustained innovative chapter programs;
- promotes chapter activities through website, newsletters/articles or social media; and
- other chapter-led activities promoting chapter sustenance.
A minimum of one activity in two or more categories is required. Explain each activity in a concise narrative. Items required as part of the application process include:
- a “Statement of Qualifications” document (PDF file) highlighting evidence that the chapter has demonstrated their commitment to fulfill the mission of APS, as evidenced above.
- a chapter affiliation agreement
- a letter from the chapter officers certifying contents of the "Statement of Qualifications"
To engage in the award, at least three applications must be received.
