APS members shall advance the discipline of physiology through integrity and excellence in teaching, research, and service.
Excellence in Research: Members are expected to be ethical in their research, especially in the use and care of animals, and honest in their reporting of research findings. Members shall be humane in the treatment of human and non-human subjects.
Excellence in Teaching: Members are expected to be conscientious in teaching the next generation. APS is committed to creating an environment where all individuals can exchange ideas and feel safe, accepted, and respected. Harassment and discrimination
are inconsistent with this mission, and will not be tolerated.
Excellence in Service: Members are expected to be ethical in their dealings with others in professional settings. Members and staff of the APS have the professional responsibility to bring any apparent violations of these principles to the attention of
the appropriate authorities. The Society has the responsibility to consider breaches of ethical behavior and to take the appropriate response in accordance with the Society's Bylaws and Operational Guide.
Discrimination, harassment (in any form), and bullying create a hostile environment that marginalizes individuals and communities and thereby reduces the quality, integrity, and pace of the advancement of science. Harassing behaviors
also damage productivity and career advancement and prevent the healthy exchange of ideas.
APS commits to promoting ethical conduct among its members and staff and will ensure that any allegations of harassment are reported, investigated, and acted upon while protecting confidentiality and affording due process to all parties.
Definition of Harassment: Harassment encompasses a variety of offensive, demeaning, or discriminatory behaviors based on factors including, but not limited to, ethnic or national origin, race, religion, citizenship, language, political or other opinion, sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, age, or economic class. In addition, APS opposes all forms of bullying, including threatening, humiliating, coercive, unwelcome, or intimidating conduct that causes harm to or interferes with scientific activity and careers.
