2009 Public Affairs Symposium on
"Trends in Animal Rights Activism and Extremism"

(sponsored by the Public Affairs Committee)

Date: Saturday, April 24
Time: 3:15 - 5:15 pm
Location: Convention Center, Rm. 303B

Organizer: Bill Yates, University of Pittsburgh

Researchers may wish to educate themselves on the new forms that animal rights activism has taken in recent years. Groups that operate legally are avidly using FOIA requests to obtain information about specific research projects. Meanwhile, the radical fringe of the movement has adopted some of the tactics pioneered by animal rights extremists in the U.K. This symposium will address key topics including how institutions should respond to requests for information made under the federal Freedom of Information Act or state open records laws; how an institution can respond effectively to an animal rights break-in; how to become a pro-active advocate for animal research; and how scientists can deal with the aftermath of an attack.

Presentations:
Responding to FOIA and State Records Law Requests
Amy Blum, UCLA

How Institutions Should Respond to Animal Rights Break-ins.
Paul S. Cooper, Univ. of Iowa
