Researchers may wish to
educate themselves on the new forms that animal rights activism has
taken in recent years. Groups that operate legally are avidly using FOIA
requests to obtain information about specific research projects.
Meanwhile, the radical fringe of the movement has adopted some of the
tactics pioneered by animal rights extremists in the U.K. This symposium
will address key topics including how institutions should respond to
requests for information made under the federal Freedom of Information
Act or state open records laws; how an institution can respond
effectively to an animal rights break-in; how to become a pro-active
advocate for animal research; and how scientists can deal with the
aftermath of an attack.
