Dr. Saper is the James Jackson Putnam Professor
of Neurology and Neuroscience and Chairman of the Harvard Department of
Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Saper is also
Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Comparative Neurology. Dr. Saper
has received a Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award from the National
Institutes of Health, and was named one of the 100 most frequently cited
neuroscientists by the Institute for Scientific Information.
Dr. Saper’s research has explored circuitry of
the brain that controls basic functions such as wake-sleep cycles, brain
responses to immune stimulation including thermoregulation and fever,
regulation of feeding and body weight, and the brain’s control of the
cardiovascular and respiratory systems. All of these basic functions are
linked by their reliance upon circadian as well as homeostatic drives, and
all of them interact with one another and are integrated with ongoing
behavior by the hypothalamus. Dr. Saper’s most recent work has focused on
the identification of a circadian integrator in the hypothalamus, which
allows flexibility of timing of these behaviors.

Many events of
potential interest to NCAR members are planned for the annual Experimental
Biology Meeting. These include the Carl Ludwig Distinguished Lecture
on Sunday, April 18 (2:00 pm)
and a NCAR Reception and Business Meeting on Monday, April 19 (6:30
pm). Also, an NCAR member, Robin
Davisson, has been selected for the Henry Pickering Bowditch Award and
will present the award lecture on Sunday April 18 (5:45 pm). In addition,
we have a one symposium and three featured topics sponsored by NCAR.

NCAR Programming for Future EB Meetings
This is the time of
year when the NCAR Steering Committee is usually busy with proposals
from the NCAR membership for Featured Topics and Symposia for the next
EB meeting. However EB in 2005 will be joint with the IUPS meeting, and
the IUPS is organizing the program. Still, it is not too early to start
thinking about EB 2006! Please start forwarding your ideas for future
Symposia and Featured Topics to the NCAR Steering Committee.

NCAR Steering
Committee Election
One member of
the NCAR Steering Committee will be completing their 3-year term this
year. Thus, we need to elect one new member to the steering committee.
Nominations should be sent to Patrice Guyenet (pgg@virginia.edu),
NCAR Secretary-Treasurer, no later than April 12, 2004. Nominations
should include a brief statement (less than 100 words) indicating why
the nominee wants to serve on the NCAR Steering Committee. The Steering
Committee will meet just prior to the EB meeting and select the top
nominees to be included on an election ballot; these nominees will be
announced at the NCAR Reception on Monday April 19. Election ballots
will be distributed to members shortly after the EB meeting. If you
have any questions regarding the NCAR Steering Committee, please consult
the NCAR section of the APS website or contact Alan Sved (sved@bns.pitt.edu)
or any member of the steering committee.
The current
members of the steering committee (and the year their term ends):
- Alan
Sved, Chair (2006)
-

Welcome to the
inaugural NCAR Trainee Page! As the current trainee representative for
the NCAR Steering Committee, I am happy to be representing the trainee
contingent of NCAR members, so please contact me with issues you wish for
