APS member Hiroko Nishimura has been awarded
the Niigata Nippo Culture Award. She is the first female to receive this
honor in the science-scholarly activity division. The award ceremony was
held on November 1, 2007, in Niigata, Japan. This award was established in 1947 by the Niigata Daily Newspaper Company, Niigata, Japan. The award is given in four areas: science, art, industrial technology, and public service. The award recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to these fields, and who have established national, international, and/or local recognition. Nominations are made by authorized individual or groups and awardees are selected by an independent selection committee representing the four fields. Dr. Akira Hasegawa, President of Niigata University, nominated Nishimura for her internationally recognized research on comparative physiology of cardiovascular-renal regulation, specifically the role of the renin-angiotensin system in the control of blood pressure and vascular wall injury. Nishimura was the recipient of the 2005 Japan Society for Promotion of Science Invited Investigatorship and was the APS 2006 August Krogh Distinguished Lecturer. |
