Peer Review and Revision
The APS Journals are well known for their thorough
and fair peer review process. To ensure this, usually two expert referees
are invited to review each paper. Acceptance of manuscripts is based on
scientific content and presentation of the material; membership in the
Society is not a prerequisite for publication. The Editor/Associate
Editor selects the reviewers, corresponds with the author, and makes the
final decision on the acceptance or rejection of the manuscript. If a
manuscript is submitted by an Editor of the Journal, another Editor
handles that manuscript. The APS Peer Review office helps ensure
confidentiality by blinding user records in the
APS Central
system to be used for this purpose.
The author may indicate his/her choice of reviewers
during online submission or may indicate who should be excluded. These
choices are at the discretion of the review Editor.
-
Less than one-half of submitted papers are ultimately
accepted by the APS research Journals, usually with some revisions (go to
your Journal Information Page for current
statistics).
-
The peer review process is performed online and tracked
electronically by the same
APS Central
system used for submissions. This process made it possible for the Editors
of the APS Journals to substantially shorten time to first decision, which
currently is less than 30 days on average (go to your
Journal Information Page for current
statistics).
-
If/when the reviewer(s) requests that changes/clarifications
be made to the submitted paper, the author(s) is responsible for making
the changes and resubmitting the new version of the paper via
APS
Central. Please carefully follow
on-screen instructions and make sure to press the “submit” button at the
end.
-
Please note that the APS peer review system allows a
maximum of six months for the revisions to be made by authors. After
this period, if there is no response from the author(s), the paper will be
withdrawn from the APS Central records.
-
After your paper is accepted, follow closely the
instructions in the acceptance letter.
-
Change of Authorship Form.
