Special Considerations for Invited Authors

If you have been invited by the Editor of one the APS Journals to write on a specific topic, you may be interested in the following considerations.

  • Depending on its content and the research Journal for which it is written, your invited work may appear as a Review, Themes, Editorial, or Editorial Focus. Please note that the Calls for Papers and Letters to the Editor are NOT considered invited material.

  • You also may be invited to write for one of the APS review-only Journals: Physiological Reviews or Physiology.

  • Invited material is peer reviewed by two expert referees.

It is of great importance that you meet the established deadlines.

What’s different about invited material, compared with regular papers?

  • As an invited Author, you will pay no Manuscript Submission Fee, no page charges, and no color fees (for scientifically necessary color figures).

  • You will receive 50 free reprints of your invited published work if you are writing for the American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Neurophysiology, Physiological Reviews, Physiology, and/or Physiological Genomics. As an alternative to 50 free reprints, you may choose a toll-free link.

  • Some Invited Reviews might be quite long (15 or more printed pages) and have a lengthy Reference list. However, always follow the Editor’s specific guidelines.

  • It is acceptable to use previously published illustrative material in the review papers (the regular research papers accept only original artwork). If you are using such material, you are required to

    • Identify the borrowed material at the end of the legend [from Smith and Jones (45)].

    • Provide permissions for each illustration from BOTH the original author and the publisher. (NOTE: if you are the author of the borrowed material and/or if the APS is the publisher, there is no need to provide that permission.)

    • Send all required original permissions to the APS Publications office. Permissions must be received before the article is published.

  • Invited material usually precedes regular articles in the Journal issue but can be placed elsewhere at the Editor’s discretion.

What standard rules apply to invited material?

Invited material must follow the general rules applicable to all APS publications:
