Proofs and Production

The APS Journals are copyedited and produced using highly trained, professional editorial staff. Our publications are highly regarded for their quality, and the author can expect that his/her work will be given careful and thorough attention. Our staff is here to help create scholarly publications of the highest quality.

  • APS Publications are making use of the latest technological advances to improve the timeliness and quality of our publications. The time from acceptance to the final print and online publication is currently slightly more than 2 months for our monthly publications.

  • The copy editor will contact the author via e-mail or by phone to clarify some points and answer queries.

  • The author will be e-mailed the composed article and will be able to make late changes, if required. This process is facilitated by the use of our electronic proof-delivery service called “Rapid Proof.”

Rapid Proof is an electronically transmitted copy of the composed proof of an article. The corresponding author receives via e-mail the appropriate URL and password allowing him/her to access the proof stored on a secure site. The current and correct e-mail address provided in the accepted manuscript is thus indispensable.

  • The author must download and print out the proof, making corrections on it by hand. Then the proofread article should be sent back to APS via overnight courier. Important: Do NOT make online alterations to the PDF itself with Adobe Acrobat-provided tools. Only the hand-marked PDF printout guarantees that your changes will be incorporated into the final text of the article.

  • The proof is in PDF format and contains illustrations in color, if applicable.

  • The proof also contains mailing and proofing instructions and the Reprint Order Form. Note: this is the best time to order your reprints to avoid higher prices later. If your article contains color, you can order reprints only at this time.

After the proof is received, the Journal Editorial staff carefully proofreads the article and introduces author’s corrections. The article is then paginated, sent for further processing, until finally it appears in the printed/online Journal issue.

The proof stage is meant to ensure that the final publication is clear, concise, and correct. The “rewriting” of the paper at proof stage is not acceptable and may lead to additional charges for excessive changes.
