Description Much has been made in recent months about making the results of scientific research freely accessible. For the first time, a coalition of some 50 not-for-profit publishers explain their “free access” approach to the dissemination of science. Their approach is both consistent with the traditions of furthering scientific advancement, and beneficial to authors and readers alike. |
WHAT:
Since the mid-1990’s, the Internet has become the medium through which medical and biological scientists publish their original work. During the last 12 months, advocates for open access have begun publishing journals incorporating an author pays model. This panel, representing the viewpoints of 50 health, medical and scientific publishers explain their approaches to free access - one that fits their long-held missions of furthering the advancement of science - that is beneficial to authors and readers alike. The panel will also discuss the ability of these models to co-exist in the marketplace. Collectively the free access signatories publish 380 journals each year, represent more than 600,000 members and post 800,000 articles on line each year of which more than 440,000 are free.
