Continuing Resolution signed into law
Just in time for the start of the new fiscal year, President Bush signed the Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance, and Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2009 (H.R. 2638) into law. This bill will fund most government agencies at FY 2008 levels until March 2009. For more on science funding in the bill, see:

NIH pilots new reporting system for FCOI
The September edition of the NIH Extramural Nexus highlights a new project in conjunction with the Federal Demonstration Partnership that will allow institutional users to submit financial conflict of interest report through the eRA Commons system. The Extramural Nexus also includes a variety of other news and information items, including the resignation of Dr. Zerhouni, implementation of peer review changes, and the recent hearing on the NIH Public Access Policy.
HHMI elects new President
This week the HHMI announced the election of Robert Tjian, Ph.D. as the new President of the Institute. Dr. Tjian is a biochemist at UC Berkeley where he studies the mechanisms of transcriptional control. He will succeed Tom Cech and start his new position in April 2009.
