APS Science Policy Update

May 9, 2008

In this issue:

  • The Scientist on NIH funding losses
  • FASEB Washington Update on Election Issues
  • Nature on animals in medical school labs

The Scientist on NIH funding

The latest issue of the Scientist profiles Alan Schneyer, a biomedical researcher who left Mass General after a 20 year career there due to the loss of his NIH funding. The article chronicles the impact that the situation had on those who worked in his lab, and also the efforts of many institutions to provide bridge funding for their researchers.

FASEB Washington Update

This week, the FASEB Office of Public Affairs issued a special edition of the Washington Update with a focus on the upcoming elections. There is a call to action requesting that scientists contact the Presidential candidates and let them know about the importance of funding biomedical research. This is a non-partisan effort aimed at reaching out to all candidates.

Nature on animals in medical school labs

The May 8 issue of Nature features an article on the value of live animals versus simulators in medical school curricula. While this is not typically the domain of this committee, APS Director of Government Relations Alice Ra’anan is quoted toward the end of the piece.
