APS Science Policy Update
September 12, 2005
In this issue:
Conference Call Reminder: On Thursday, September 15 at 4 PM EST, the PA committee will hold its first monthly conference call.
Changing Congressional Priorities: With Congress returning from the August recess, priorities have shifted dramatically due to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and the death of Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist. In the House of Representatives, it was anticipated that the Energy and Commerce committee would turn its focus to NIH Reauthorization. That committee is now planning to hold hearings on rising energy prices caused by the hurricane damage in the Gulf States. In the Senate, it was hoped that following the nomination hearings for Judge Roberts, attention would return to Appropriations and approval of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. It now seems likely that many of these issues will be delayed as Congress focuses on more immediate priorities. Scientific Responsibility: In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, many are asking questions about what could have been done to prevent the tragic events following the storm, and what steps can be taken in the future. This news article from the current issue of Nature explores the role of scientists in communicating the implications of their work to the government. http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v437/n7056/full/437174a.html
