APS Science Policy Update

August 8, 2007

In this issue:

  • House and Senate pass competitiveness legislation
  • APS ethics resources
  • FASEB Conflict of Interest Toolkit

House and Senate pass competitiveness legislation

Before adjourning for the August recess, both the House of Representatives and the Senate passed a package of legislation called the America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science (COMPETES) Act. The America COMPETES act is the culmination of multiple efforts to implement the recommendations issued in the National Academies 2005 report “Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future.” The Act sets aside nearly $34 billion to enhance STEM education over the next three fiscal years, authorizes multiple grant programs aimed at creating more math and science teachers, and authorizes budget doublings at the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Standards Technology, and the office of science in the Department of Energy over the next ten years. APS Ethics Resources

The American Physiological Society has long had a number of ethical guidelines and policies for its members. These resources are available in one place on the APS Science Policy website under “APS Position Statements.”

FASEB Conflict of Interest Toolkit

Given the recent focus on scientists and conflict of interest, FASEB has played an active role in developing principles and guidelines to help scientists understand and appropriately manage conflicts of interest. As part of that effort, FASEB has developed a set of web based resources available through a link on the APS Science Policy website.
