In the January issue, the Office of Extramural Research addresses the upcoming conversion to electronic grant submission, the recent National Academies Report on Women in the Sciences, and changes in peer review.

Slowing drug development

A report released in mid-December by the Government Accountability Office showed that the rising amount of money spent on research by the pharmaceutical industry has not resulted in a commensurate increase in the number of new drugs developed. While the reasons for this trend are many, a lack of trained physician-scientists was cited.

Reducing the need for medical care
