APS Science Policy Update

July 20th, 2006

In this issue:

  • Senate appropriations
  • House of Representatives fails to override Bush veto of stem cell legislation
  • APS Science Policy events on EB website
  • FASEB advocacy presentation
  • FASEB conflict of interest report

Senate spending bills

Senate appropriators met today to consider the Labor-HHS-Ed bill that contains funding for the NIH. Despite hopes that the Senate would be able to add significantly more money to the Administration’s allocation, the current version of the bill adds only $200 million over the FY 2006 budget, for a total of $28.5 billion.

Last week the Senate appropriations committee approved the bill that will fund the National Science Foundation and NASA, giving substantial increases to both agencies. For more information, see: http://sciencenow.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/2006/713/1

Stem Cell Legislation Fails to Survive Veto

Following passage of the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (HR 810) in the Senate, members of Congress were unable to override a Presidential veto of the legislation. To see how your Representative voted, go to: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2006/roll388.xml

FASEB Powerpoint Presentation

On the most recent FASEB board call, Richard Marchese shared the following powerpoint presentation that he prepared in cooperation with the FASEB OPA staff. The idea is to use it as a model that can be adapted and used in different geographic areas to communicate the benefits of biomedical research. http://opa.faseb.org/pdf/NIH%20advocacy%20slide%20presentation.ppt

Conflict of Interest Report

Following last summer's workshop on conflict of interest, FASEB has published a number of guiding principles for managing conflict of interest in relationships between researchers and industry. FASEB will continue to pursue this area and was recently awarded a grant from the Office of Research Integrity to continue their activities.
