Congress Compromises on Budget Increases for NSF, NASA On November 7, the House and Senate finalized the FY 2006 budget numbers for the bill that funds the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA. Both agencies will receive increases, as indicated below, but the final numbers are still be subject change if an across the board cut is necessary to avoid spending over the committee's budget allocation.
Under the compromise version of the bill, NSF will receive $5.65 billion, a 3.3% increase over the FY 2005 funding level and 1% above the Administration's request. Research and Related Activities will receive $4.4 billion (4% more than in FY 2005), and Education and Human Resources will receive $807 million (9.5% more than the Administration's request, but still less than in FY 2005). NASA will receive $16.5 billion, an increase of $260 million over FY 2005.
Reaching Conferees on the Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Bill House and Senate conferees are expected to meet next week to work on the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill that funds the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In an effort to reach lawmakers and express support for NIH funding, APS signed on to two coalition letters to conferees urging that the NIH be funded at the Senate-passed level of $29.4 billion. On of those letters will appear as an ad in CongressDaily next week. In addition, FASEB has issued an action alert to allow society members to contact their Congressional representatives in support of the higher funding level.http://capwiz.com/faseb/issues/alert/?alertid=8220126&type=CO
