IACUC 101 for Scientists: Dealing with Problem Areas

This presentation will move beyond the basics of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to address issues that may require special attention from the IACUC. These include the role of the IACUC as a facilitator of research; conducting the semi-annual program review and facility inspection; designated member vs. full committee reviews; comparing grants to protocols; post-approval monitoring; and creating a culture of compliance. Protocol review special topics will include alleviating pain and distress; endpoints, intervention points, and timely euthanasia; justification of numbers and alternative searches; and working with transgenics and breeding colonies. Participants will also be able to pose questions to representatives of USDA, OLAW, and AAALAC.
