miRNA Regulation of the Mitochondrion in Cardiovascular Disease
Associate Editor Dr. Leon De Windt and Guest Editor Dr. John Hollander, along with the editorial team of AJP-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, invite submission of original research and short reviews on small non-coding RNAs in the regulation of the mitochondrion during cardiovascular pathological states. Small non-coding RNAs, and in particular miRNAs, have gained considerable attention for their impact on regulatory axes that intersect with cardiovascular disease development. Further, the contribution of the mitochondrion as an important subcellular locus for maintaining cardiac and vascular function highlights its importance as a regulatory component and potential targetable site for disease detection and therapeutic intervention. These small non-coding RNAs are studied as regulatory targets of the mitochondrion through several different mechanistic means, including but not limited to, nuclear-mitochondrial crosstalk—as direct regulators within the mitochondrion proper, as circulatory factors connecting remote tissues to one another, or as regulators of mitochondrial content and internal constituents. Though information regarding the role played by miRNAs and small non-coding RNAs during cardiovascular disease development is rapidly expanding, identification of the intersection with the mitochondrion remains poorly understood and under studied.

We will consider both original research articles and review articles. For review articles only, authors should email the editorial office (khkeehan@verizon.net.) a pre-submission inquiry including a working title, author and affiliation list, abstract and brief outline of the content for approval by the editors.

All manuscripts accepted from this Call for Papers will be included in a unique online article collection to further highlight the importance of this topic. The article collection will also include specially commissioned Review articles on the topic.

All manuscripts should be submitted online at http://ajpheart.msubmit.net/cgi-bin/main.plex

During the online submission process, under the "Keywords & Special Sections" tab, please use the "Category" drop-down menu and select “Call for Papers: miRNA Regulation of the Mitochondrion in Cardiovascular Disease."

Manuscripts will undergo normal peer review as they are received. Accepted manuscripts will be published online as they are accepted. Articles published from this Call for Papers will be highlighted with a special “Call for Papers” banner on the article PDF, as well as inclusion in the “Call for Papers: miRNA Regulation of the Mitochondrion in Cardiovascular Disease” online article collection at time of publication.

Manuscripts must be submitted by August 31, 2017 to be eligible for inclusion in this Call for Papers. If you have any questions please contact Kara Hansell Keehan, Executive Editor, via email at khkeehan@verizon.net.
