Vitamins exert varied and complex functions required for overall health throughout all life stages. These include roles in transcriptional processes and metabolic programming as enzyme cofactors and as antioxidants. Adipose tissue is both a site of storage for some vitamins and a target of vitamin action. Adiposity may impact the systemic levels of vitamins via sequestration and limiting bioavailability, and population-based studies have demonstrated an association of obesity with vitamin deficiencies. Studies of vitamins A and D, in particular, have shed light on the mechanistic relationship between these vitamins and aspects of adipose tissue function. However, the functions of other types of vitamins in adipose tissue are less well appreciated.
The editors of AJP - E&M encourage submission of manuscripts reporting studies that utilize combinations of biochemical, cell-based, and animal models to provide novel insights into the mechanisms of vitamin action in white and brown adipose tissues, obesity, and energy balance. Of particular interest are studies investigating the actions of vitamins in areas of current and emerging high interest in adipose biology and obesity-related metabolic diseases. Examples include but are not limited to 1) the role of specific vitamins in maternal and transgenerational metabolic programming of offspring, 2) impact of vitamins on key enzymatic pathways of lipogenesis and lipolysis in adipocytes, 3) vitamins as sensors and regulators of brown and white adipose mass, plasticity, and energy expenditure, 4) the interplay of vitamins and adipocytokine actions, 5) how vitamins may regulate cross-talk of adipocytes and immune cells in adipose tissue, 6) the role of the intestinal microbiome in vitamin function in the setting of adiposity-related metabolic diseases. We will consider both original research articles and review articles. For review articles only, authors should email the editorial office (email@example.com) with a pre-submission inquiry including a working title, author and affiliation list, abstract, and brief outline of the content for approval by the editors.
Submission Deadline: September 30, 2017
