K-12 Outreach

K-12 Outreach

Advances in Physiology Education is soliciting the submission of original manuscripts that showcase K–12 outreach activities. Science outreach benefits everyone who participates. Children benefit by virtue of becoming aware of—and learning from—real scientists; K–12 teachers benefit by developing partnerships and collaborations with scientists so they can learn more about science and stay current in their knowledge; scientists, trainees, and grad students benefit by experiencing the joy of helping children learn, by learning about pedagogy from experts (K–12 teachers), and by the opportunity to improve their communication and presentation abilities; institutions benefit by being involved in their communities and by the career development of their faculty and students; and stronger community ties benefit all.

We are especially interested in papers that highlight the best practices of outreach and address questions like these. How do you start a preliminary dialogue with a school? How do you establish a relationship with a teacher? How do you develop an activity that is educationally sound? How do you develop an activity that is grade-level appropriate? How do you sustain the activity over time? How has your outreach impacted you professionally or personally?

Contributing authors should indicate in their cover letter that their submission is in response to this Call for Papers. Standard peer review procedures will be followed. When accepted for publication, articles will be identified as responses to this Call.

Contact the Editor-in-Chief, Douglas Everett (EverettD@NJHealth.org), to indicate your interest in preparing a manuscript for this Call.
