Research Scientist Positions

Staff Scientist Position in Systems Biology at NIH: Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, NHLBI Systems Biology Center, Epithelial Systems Biology Laboratory (ESBL). A Staff Scientist position is available in Dr. Mark Knepper’s laboratory in the Systems Biology Center at National Institutes of Health to oversee studies using proteomics and computational approaches. These studies will investigate vasopressin signaling in kidney collecting duct cells, as well as signaling abnormalities in associated water balance disorders. Current efforts focus on identification of protein kinases regulated by the vasopressin V2 receptor (a GPCR), and discovering the substrate targets of these kinases with a view toward constructing an overall network model of vasopressin signaling.  At NIH, the “Staff Scientist” is a central member of research teams, who typically runs the scientific and teaching aspects of a Principal Investigator’s research program. He/she would provide direct supervision for 3-4 students and/or postdocs.  Together with the PI, he/she would steer the long-term direction of the research group.  The opportunity exists also for the Staff Scientist to conduct his/her own studies in the above research area.  See    https://intramural.nhlbi.nih.gov/

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in  Bioengineering, Computational Biology, or Physiology and significant experience in epithelial research, protein mass spectrometry, and bio-informatic interpretation of large-scale data sets. He/she should have publications demonstrating these skills, as well as expertise in the area of cell signaling.  Fluent command of both spoken and written English is imperative, as is the ability to design and write effective computer code. Applicant should have experience in supervising trainees in laboratory research, and must have a track record indicative of innovative thinking. Palmer College of Chiropractic, the first and largest chiropractic college in the world, includes three campuses: the Davenport Campus in Davenport, Iowa; the West Campus in San Jose, California; and the Florida Campus in Port Orange, Florida. More than 25% of all chiropractors practicing in the US have graduated from Palmer. The Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) was established in 1995 and is currently the largest and most highly funded research effort in the chiropractic educational community. The PCCR includes faculty and staff on all three Palmer College campuses. Thus far, the PCCR has been awarded $35 million dollars in research grants through the National Institutes of Health, Health Resources and Services Administration and the Department of Defense, including three NIH Center awards. The majority of PCCR research is conducted collaboratively with other academic institutions. Current partners include The University of Iowa Colleges of Medicine and Public Health, The University of Iowa Department of Biomedical Engineering, Hines VA Hospital, Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, the University of Alberta, Kansas State University, SUNY at Stony Brook and Thomas Jefferson University. Current multidisciplinary clinical research projects are underway with the University of Iowa CTSA Dental Clinical Research Center, Genesis Family Medical Center and RAND Corporation. The PCCR employs four administrators, ten faculty, seven research fellows, and 21 professional and administrative staff. The Davenport campus research facility is housed in the 25,000 square foot, five-floor building which includes office space, research clinic, and biomechanics and basic science laboratories. Assistant Professor,  Exercise Physiology: The Department of Exercise Science in The GWU School of Public Health and Health Services is seeking an outstanding scholar with interdisciplinary expertise in exercise physiology and metabolism. The Department of Exercise Science has an active research portfolio and offers both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Exercise Science.  The successful candidate will be expected to develop and support an independent, competitively-funded research program; teach in the undergraduate and graduate programs; mentor and advise students, publish in top tier peer-reviewed journals; establish research collaborations with faculty in the GWU School of Public Health and Health Services; serve on University committees; and provide service to the profession, community, and to the University.  This is a renewable 12-month, tenure-accruing appointment beginning July 1, 2012.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.
