To the APS Membership:
As you know, two bombs exploded yesterday near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. At least 3 people were killed, and more than a hundred were injured, some seriously. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this horrific event.
Our 126th Annual Meeting is scheduled to begin Saturday in Boston as part of the Experimental Biology meeting. We are planning for the meeting to proceed as planned. Today, the FASEB meeting staff met with all hotel representatives, Boston Convention and Exposition Center (BCEC) security, leadership and representatives from the Convention and Visitors Bureau. They reported that everything is operational but with an increased security presence on the streets, in the airport, in the t stations and at the BCEC. We are not anticipating any changes in our plans but if there is a need to update meeting attendees, the notice will be posted on the EB web site: http://experimentalbiology.org/EB/pages/default.aspx?splashpage=1 as well as on the APS web site: www.the-aps.org.
You are likely to encounter security-related delays traveling to Boston, and as noted, there will be added security throughout the city as a result of this act of terror. Nevertheless, we hope that by going forward and exchanging ideas with colleagues and friends, we can begin to restore a sense of normalcy.
Please share this message with others who are not APS members.
The APS Council and staff look forward to seeing you in Boston.
Sincerely,
Martin Frank
