American Physiological Society Announces Partnership with Springer

Agreement covers Methods in Physiology, Clinical Physiology, and Progress and Perspectives in Physiology book series, digitization and more

Bethesda, Md. (Aug. 17, 2011) - A new joint partnership between the American Physiological  Society (APS), a principal voice in the life sciences, and Springer, a leading global scientific publisher of books and journals, will result in a number of new publications designed specifically for the research community.

Under the agreement, Springer will publish new books for the Society’s current series: Methods in Physiology, Clinical Physiology, and Progress and Perspectives in Physiology. They will be published in print as well as in electronic format, as part of Springer’s Physiology eBook Collection.  Springer also will publish individual monographs and contributed volumes.

Included in the partnership will be 32 previously published APS titles, which will be digitized and made available through Springer’s Online Book Archives. The APS will receive free access in perpetuity to these newly created digital backfiles.

APS will commission the book projects. The non-profit organization is devoted to fostering education, scientific research, and dissemination of information in the physiological sciences. APS was founded in 1887 and currently publishes 14 peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Neurophysiology and Physiological Genomics.

Springer will provide editorial guidance as well as production distribution, marketing, sales and distribution services. The company publishes the largest science, technology and medicine (STM) eBook Collection in the world and is part of the publishing group Springer Science+Business Media, which publishes around 2,000 journals and more than 7,000 new books annually.

APS Executive Director Martin Frank said, “We are excited to be partnering with Springer to bring additional content to the physiology research community, an area of the life sciences that sees continuous progress in understanding human health and disease.” He added, “In selecting Springer, APS did so because of Springer’s long history and commitment to digitizing the Society’s past titles as well as Springer’s willingness to include APS books in their eBook Collection.”

William Curtis, Springer’s Executive Vice President Clinical Medicine, Biomedicine and Life Sciences, William Curtis added, “Springer is delighted to partner with the American Physiological Society and work with its authors and members to bring top physiology research to the global community. The APS has an active book program and a long history of collaborating with the country’s best physiologists. We look forward to working together with them.”
