Proposed Code of Organization and Procedures

ARTICLE I: NAME

The name of this organization is the HISTORY OF PHYSIOLOGY GROUP (HPG) OF THE AMERICAN PHYSIOLOGICAL SOCIETY.

ARTICLE II: HISTORY

The idea for an organization devoted to the History of Physiology is attributed to John West who in 1983 discussed the concept with Clifford Barger, Ralph Kellogg, Daniel Gilbert and Louise Marshall. In 1984 an organizational meeting was held at the FASEB Meeting in St. Louis and a HISTORY OF PHYSIOLOGY SECTION was established. At that session, John West was elected President, Toby A. Appel was elected Secretary, and Norman Staub was elected to the Representative to the Program Advisory Committee. Three years later it was designated as the HISTORY OF PHYSIOLOGY GROUP because it did not contain 100 members who had designated it as their primary affiliation as required by the APS Membership Service Department.

ARTICLE III: PURPOSES

The purposes of this Group are:

  1. To be available to all members of the Society with an interest in the History of Physiology.

  2. To promote the significance and awareness of the History of Physiology within the American Physiological Society.

  3. To assist the Society, through representation on the Joint Program Committee, in the incorporation of History of Physiology topics in the scientific meetings of the Society.

  4. To assist the Executive Secretary in selecting a recipient for the Orr E. Reynolds Award in accordance with the APS Operational Guide.

  5. To actively promote the archival efforts of the Society, Living History video recordings of older physiologists and the Living History biographical articles in Advances in Physiology Education for older physiologists.

  6. To promote the establishment of a History of Physiology Lecture.

ARTICLE IV: MEMBERSHIP

Membership with voting privileges is open to any member of the Society (student, affiliate, regular, emeritus) who wishes to be identified with the Group. This can be accomplished by use of the Web site for APS Members or by conveying this interest to a staff member of the APS Membership Office.  Group membership is also conferred after application to the Executive Director of the Society.
