Hebert Lecture Awardees

2012 Steve Hebert Lecturer

Bill Guggino, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

William B. Guggino, Ph.D., Professor and Director of Physiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is the recipient of the 2012 Hebert award. His research is focused on investigating the structure and function of chloride, potassium and water channels; trafficking and molecular organization of transport proteins in epithelial cell membranes; and gene therapy for the correction of defective ion transport in cystic fibrosis (CF) cells.  His research on CF was recognized last year when he won the Doris F. Tulcin Cystic Fibrosis Research Award. In 1992, Dr. Guggino, in collaboration with Peter Agre, M.D., published a seminal paper in Science that described the discovery of the very first aquaporin water channel. --Contributed by Bruce Stanton
