Oklahoma Society of Physiologists 20th Annual Meeting Business Meeting

Attendees: Participants at Twentieth Annual OSP Meeting
Dr. Warren Finn, OSP president, called the meeting to order at 12:45 p.m. on June 1, 2001. Dr. Finn welcomed the members to the business meeting. He recognized the two student speakers, Connie Hebert and Steve Sands, and thank them for their oral presentations. Dr. Finn and all OSP members expressed gratitude to Guy Tatum and his staff Tulsa Technology Center for the excellent presentation and tour of the Aerospace center which is a new state-of-the art facility. The meeting turned out to be a real treat for members and everyone agreed to hold future meetings here. Dr. Finn spoke about significance of the OSP commended everyone on the fact that OSP has survived for 20 years. He mentioned how research in general has changed in the last 20 years and how Oklahoma researchers have adapted. Dr. Finn also stated that OSP has and continues to serve the need for Oklahoma physiologists to communicate on issues related to research and education and for encouraging students in Oklahoma to pursue to careers in physiology and the biomedical sciences. Everyone present agreed with Dr. Finn of the importance of maintaining the society, increasing membership, and strengthening the society to provide services to students, educators, and researchers around the state of Oklahoma.
Dr. Finn then asked for the Treasurer's report. Dr. Rouch, OSP secretary/treasurer presented the report below. Dr. Rouch reported that this time last year the society had $1,772.65 and now it has $1,603.35. Expenses included money for the student award and keynote speaker for last year's meeting. Estimated income from annual dues is $150. Dr. Rouch mentioned that efforts are in place to obtain tax-exempt status for OSP. He also informed members that a fall newsletter will be sent in October or November. Dr. Finn then told members about the next meeting to be held at the Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City.
Dr. Robert Foreman will be the new OSP president. Members voted for Dr. Randy Wymore to be the President-elect. The meeting in June, 2002 will be held at Tulsa University. Ideas on how to increase membership and awareness of the society were discussed. Helen Kodish suggested that OSP be represented at the next Oklahoma Education Association meeting where state educators at levels will be assembled. Helen mentioned that a list of science teachers in the state of Oklahoma can be obtained from the State department. Helen suggested that OSP could have a booth at the meeting to advertise the society. Connie Hebert suggested that we make tear-away OSP membership cards for people to fill out similar to the ones APS uses. Dr. Barbara Shirley suggested the OU Medical school in Tulsa be contacted and informed about the society. Dr. Shirley also suggested that effort to recruit potential graduate students by sending flyers to undergraduate schools around the state.
Dr. Finn and Dr. Rouch will discuss these and other suggestions and relay them to members in future correspondence.
There being no further business, Dr. Finn adjourned the meeting at 2:15 p.m.
