2nd Annual Meeting

President's Report on the Second Annual Meeting
of the Iowa Physiological Society, 1997

The second scientific meeting of the Iowa Physiological Society was held in conjunction with the 109th Annual Meeting of Iowa Academy of Science at Clarke College, Dubuque on Friday and Saturday, April 25-26, 1997. Our Scientific Sessions were merged with those for the 28th Annual Meeting of the Academy's Physiology Section. Approximately 60 people attended. There were 21 presentations including 11 posters by a total of 48 investigators representing 11 institutions from 4 states. By the end of the meeting there were 45 IPS members.

This meeting began Friday afternoon when the 11 Physiology Posters were displayed along side 18 other posters at the Academy's General Poster Session. Our posters were then transferred to the site of our Saturday Sessions for further discussion in the early morning and again during our buffet over the noon hour. The IAS President, William Gilbert, of Simpson College, IAS Past-President, Ross Iverson, of Miller Middle School, Marshalltown, and IAS Journal Editor, Neil Bernstein, of Mt. Mercy College were guests of IPS at our buffet.

The Saturday morning session was devoted "The Application of Computers, Telecommunication, and Research Experience to the Teaching of Physiology" with its concluding paper by APS Executive Director, Martin Frank presenting "Frontiers in Physiology: The APS Summer Research Program for Middle and High School Students".

The Saturday afternoon session was devoted to research presentations. It opened with the invited lecture by R. Kent Hermsmeyer presently of the Oregon Regional Primate Center and formerly of the University of Iowa. Dr. Hermsmeyer, who received the APS's 1982 Bowditch Award for his work on the electrophysiology of vascular smooth muscle spoke on "Reactivity Based Coronary Vasospasm Independent of Atherosclerosis". His lecture was sponsored by the American Physiological Society and by Pfizer Inc.

Russell Rulon of Luther College was elected to the offices of IPS President-Elect and IAS Physiology Co-Chair. At the close of the meeting Charles Wunder, University of Iowa turned the offices of IPS President and IAS Physiology Chair over to Donald Stratton of Drake University.
