5th Annual Meeting Summary

LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport (LSUHSC-S) hosted the 5th Annual Gulf Coast Physiological Society Meeting April 17-18, 2009 in New Orleans on the campus of LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans (LSUHSC-NO) immediately before the APS Experimental Biology 2009 Annual Meeting.  Matt Grisham (LSUHSC-S) served as President of the meeting with the Organizing Committee consisting of Steve Alexander (LSUHSC-S), Neil Granger (LSUHSC-S), Norman Harris (LSUHSC-S), Mary Townsley (University of South Alabama), Patricia Molina (LSUHSC-NO) and Gabby Navar (Tulane University).  

Mark Gladwin (University of Pittsburgh) was selected as the Keynote speaker for the meeting and gave a very entertaining lecture entitled “Haldane, Hot Dogs and Halitosis”. In addition, 4 junior faculty members were invited to present their work as 30 minute oral presentations. These presenters included Jerry Breslin (LSUHSC-NO), Khalid Matrougui (Tulane University), Michael Ryan (University of Mississippi) and Mark Taylor (University of South Alabama). 

Finally, the abstracts submitted by 8 trainees (post docs and graduate students) were selected as 15 minute oral presentations. Following their presentations, Sydney Murphy (University of Mississippi) and Caroline Raasch (LSUHSC-NO), both PhD students, were each presented with and APS-sponsored Student Award of $250 each. 

Keynote speaker (Mark Gladwin) as well as the junior faculty and trainees (post docs and students) who were invited/selected to speak at the GCPS meeting.

The meeting attracted 82 participants of which 44 submitted abstracts. Attendees represented 6 different Universities/Colleges (LSUHSC-S, LSUHSC-NO), Tulane University, University of Mississippi, University of South Alabama and Centenary College in Shreveport).
