APS NEWS
1) NEW APS Trainee Website
     The APS Trainee Advisory Committee is pleased to announce the launch of the APS Trainees web site (http://www.the-aps.org/trainees). The site contains information and resources for graduate students, postdocs, and new investigators.
     Included are links to the Trainee Advisory Committee and reports on its activities, trainee associations, trainee newsletters, EB symposium information, awards, career planning, families and science careers, finding a job, funding resources, lab management, and mentoring.
     If you know of resources that would be helpful to have links to, please contact APS Education Office at education@the-aps.org.

2)  APS Short Course on Writing and Reviewing for Scientific Journals from May 4-7, 2006
Application Deadline � February 20

     Do you want to...?
        Improve your skills at writing and submitting manuscripts?
        Learn how to better respond to reviewer criticisms?
        Know how to select a journal for submission?
        Learn how to be a good reviewer yourself?
        Discover how diversity issues may be influencing how you write and review manuscripts?
        Learn about resources that can further develop your writing and reviewing skills?
If so, then you'll want to apply for the APS's Short Course on Writing and Reviewing for Scientific Journals from May 4-7, 2006 at The Inverness Hotel and Conference Center in Englewood, CO.

    Who can apply?
� Upper level graduate students (have passed preliminary exams or finished coursework) AND lower level postdoctoral fellows (within first 1-2 years of postdoctoral training)
� Applicants must be US citizens or permanent US residents
� Students active in APS minority programs will be given priority

     What is the cost?
Thanks to support from NIGMS/NIH, accepted students will receive FREE:
� Registration and materials
� Travel support (roundtrip budget airfare or mileage)
� Subsistence (hotel-double occupancy, food per diem, and ground transportation)

6) APS Resource Book for the Design of Animal Exercise Protocols
     The American Physiological Society (APS) announces the publication of a Resource Book for the Design of Animal Exercise Protocols. The opening chapter of the Resource Book outlines the scope of the document and addresses the relevance of studying exercise in general as well as the specific question, why study exercise in animals? Topics addressed in the APS Resource Book include general concerns such as selecting appropriate animal models for exercise research, study design considerations, animal stress, working with compromised animals, and the impact of surgery on exercise. NIH's Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) sponsored the development of the APS Resource Book, and single copies are available free of charge from OLAW while supplies last. Contact OLAW@od.nih.gov to request a free copy. Copies may also be purchased for $9.50 each from the APS store (www.the-aps.org/store/). NPA NEWS

1) Annual Meeting Deadlines Approaching
     The NPA has issued a call for poster abstracts to be presented at its upcoming Annual Meeting, April 21-23, in Bethesda, MD.  Abstracts are due March 3rd. The NPA is also accepting travel award applications for the meeting, due February 17th, and nominations for its Distinguished Service Award, due next Friday, February 10th. 2) NPA Comments on Federal Postdoc Training Principles
    The NPA submitted comments earlier this week on the National Science and Technology Council's (NSTC) "Proposed Principles for Federal Support of Graduate and Postdoctoral Education and Training in Science and Engineering" (FR Doc. 05--22744).  The NSTC is housed within the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. NIH Launches Extramural Nexus
    
The National Institutes of Health Office of Extramural Research (OER) launches an online newsletter to provide updates on NIH extramural issues via the NIH Extramural Nexus. The OER is the hub for grants policy and operations, grants administration, and the coordination of NIH's extramural programs and activities. Through the Nexus, the OER will provide the external scientific community with updates on NIH policies and activities as well as an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the operation of extramural programs.

SACNAS Call for Session Proposals
    The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) is accepting proposals in the following session categories:

2) Short Courses in Integrative and Organ Systems Pharmacology

     The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) has awarded four Education Project (R25) grants to support short course workshops for training in integrative and organ systems pharmacology. NIGMS recognizes the importance of studies using intact organ systems and in vivo models in the conduct of research.
     The courses are intended to provide training opportunities for students at the graduate, postdoctoral, and faculty levels; and for students from industry and government as well as academia. 3) 12th Annual Conference on Teaching Survival Skills and Ethics
    We're writing to inform you of the availability of fellowships to support the attendance of individuals at the 12th Annual Conference on Teaching Survival Skills and Ethics to be held June 11-16, 2006, in Snowmass, Colorado. This 5-day trainer-of-trainers conference, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health, is designed to prepare faculty and administrators to establish or improve instruction in the responsible conduct of research and in professional development (e.g., writing research articles and grant applications; making oral presentations and teaching; funding employment; hiring, supervising, and mentoring).
    Members of the conference faculty include Gary Comstock (Professor and Director of the Research Ethics Program, North Carolina State University), Debra Parrish (Partner at Parrish Law Offices, specializing in research integrity and intellectual property law), David Jensen (professional career counselor and contributor to Science Next Wave), Jeffrey Kahn (Professor and Director, University of Minnesota Center for Bioethics), Julio Ramirez (Professor, Davidson College), Craig Wilcox (Professor of Chemistry, University of Pittsburgh), and Clayton Wiley (Professor of Pathology and Director of MD/PhD Program, University of Pittsburgh.)
    Individuals attending the conference will receive an extensive set of lecture outlines, ethics cases, student handouts, readings, slides, and a comprehensive bibliography. Attendance is limited to 50 persons and applications are considered on a rolling basis.    There are a number of conference fellowships available, which cover travel, lodging, food, and all but $350 of the registration fee.
