3) National Postdoctoral Association
(http://www.nationalpostdoc.org)
a) Here is your chance to participate in the national expansion of a new
Certificate Program in Scientific Leadership and Management at UC
Davis this August. As described in Nature (v440, 03/09/2006), this program
uses unique training methods that allows you to practice professional skills
needed to help you run a research program and achieve breakthrough science
and a distinguished career. Tuition for the 14-hour academic credit
certificate program is an allowable expense by most granting agencies or ask
your mentor or institutional administrator to sponsor you to attend all or a
portion of this valuable program. For more information and to enroll please
visit
http://www.research.ucdavis.edu/LMI or
http://ucdextension.ucdavis.edu:81/CT00055102NDgy.HTML and ask for your
discount for NPA members.
b) New Issue of the POSTDOCket Now Available
The Spring 2006 edition of the NPA's official quarterly newsletter, the
POSTDOCket, is now available at
http://www.nationalpostdoc.org/POSTDOCket. Submission of articles and
news items for future issues of the newsletter are welcomed. Contact
Venkataraman Sriram (vsriram@nationalpostdoc.org),
POSTDOCket editor, to discuss and submit your ideas.
c) 2006 NPA Annual Meeting Proceedings Now Online
Speaker presentations and handouts for the 2006 National Postdoctoral
Association Annual Meeting are now available online. Visit the 2006 Annual
Meeting site
(http://www.nationalpostdoc.org)
to view and download session materials.
4) Life Science Forum
The Life Science Forum (LSF) is a FREE service to life science research
community. The discussion forums have been created to give researchers the
ability to exchange ideas, tips, information and techniques. While LSF
encourages the free exchange of opinions, there are guidelines that must be
followed in order to ensure that the discussion forum experience remains
positive for our community. Registration is not required for viewing the LSF
forum. However it does require the registered users for posting and replying
discussion topics. The registration is FREE. Check it out at
http://www.lifescienceforum.com/lsf/

listings.
1) Postdoctoral Position
A postdoctoral fellowship in growth factor regulation of coronary
angiogenesis in 1) development, and 2) angiogenic therapy for the ischemic
and postinfarcted heart is available immediately. Studies aimed at
elucidating mechanisms that regulate embryonic/fetal and postnatal formation
of the coronary vasculature focus on growth factor interactions and the
contribution of stem cells. Both in vitro and in vivo approaches are
utilized. The studies regarding angiogenic therapy for the ischemic and
postinfarcted heart focuses on non-invasive models. The applicant should
have a background in cell/tissue culture, immunohistochemistry and
physiology. Qualified candidates should submit their CV, along with a
letter, to:
Dr. Robert J. Tomanek
Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology
The University of Iowa
1-402 Bowen Science Building
Iowa City, IA 52240-1109
2) Postdoctoral Position
A postdoctoral position is available to study the function and structure
of TRPV channels in sensing noxious (noxious chemicals, high temperature) or
mechanical (flow sensing, stretch) stimuli. The TRPV ion channels are a new
super family of calcium-permeable cation channels that are widely expressed
in sensory and non-sensory cells although their functions and mechanisms of
regulation are poorly understood. The project is broadly focused on the
mechanisms of regulation of these channels with a particular emphasis on
understanding the role of the various channel domains/segments in both
sensing stimuli and in activation/inhibition of the channel in models of
pain or mechanosensation. Other areas relating to the biology of TRPV
channel regulation are also open for study. The preferred candidate should
have a strong background in molecular/cell biology and experience in
electrophysiological assessment (esp. patch clamp) of ion channel properties
and function. Candidates should have a Ph.D. or M.D. degree (Master degree
candidates with experience will be considered). Prior postdoctoral
experience is not required. The position is available immediately.
The project is a joint effort between the laboratories of Drs. Vasanthi
Jayaraman and Roger G. ONeil. Send CV, names of three references (or
reference letters), and a brief explanation of your interest in the position
to: Dr. Roger G. ONeil (e-mail:
Roger.G.ONeil@uth.tmc.edu; Phone: 713-500-6316), Department of
Integrative Biology & Pharmacology, The University of Texas Houston Medical
School (MSB 4.118), 6431 Fannin, Houston, TX 77030 . The University of Texas
Health Science Center at Houston is an EO/AA employer.
3) Professor of Physiology
FACULTY OF MEDICINE
SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES
REF. 4273NET
The Faculty of Medicine is seeking to appoint a Professor of Physiology who
will provide academic leadership and contribute, with vision and innovation,
to the discipline within the School of Medical Sciences. Applications close
9 June 2006
This is a very significant opportunity for a leader to build upon the
strongest of platforms and shape an exciting future, positioning the School
amongst the foremost group of peers on the international stage. The Chair
will be asked to exercise, promote and facilitate the very best research,
academic and organizational performance. They must also motivate staff
within the School towards the individual and collective achievement of
excellence.
In addition to providing research leadership in this "Group of Eight"
University and fostering connections between the School and nearby research
institutes and hospitals, the successful candidate would be expected to
promote multidisciplinary research and explore new funding paradigms.
Ideally, the Chair's research interests will complement the Faculty's
strategic research specializations: Neuroscience, Inflammation,
Cardiovascular or Cancer. A critical part of the academic leadership role
will be oversight of and participation in teaching and assessment in
undergraduate Medicine and Science programs, and postgraduate coursework
programs. An attractive compensation package will be available to enable
recruitment of a Chair and team and establish a first class facility.
