-Omic Approaches to Understanding Muscle Biology

We warmly invite contributions of original research or review articles in the field of muscle biology, including developmental biology, muscular dystrophies, exercise physiology, metabolic disease, and atrophy due to disuse, aging, or disease. Omic sciences are rapidly evolving, and we encourage authors to disseminate new advances within these fields at any level of biological organization, i.e. genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, or multi-omic approaches.

Skeletal muscle undergoes a complex developmental process that creates mature multinucleate fibers exhibiting a broad range of different phenotypes. In addition, muscle is the target of monogenic diseases, including muscular dystrophies as well as complex polygenic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes. We hope this special collection will convey the vast opportunity for generating new hypotheses in muscle biology by combining high-throughput techniques with nontargeted/unsupervised experiment designs. Biology is not organized as discrete linear pathways, and in most cases individual entities (i.e., individual genes, transcripts, proteins, or metabolites) in isolation have little influence over physiological outcomes. Therefore, mechanistic data from targeted analyses must be combined with more holistic omic data to move our understanding of physiological and pathophysiological processes forward. We hope this special collection will lead to wider incorporation of appropriate and informative functional genomic techniques among the physiology research community.
