What is an app, and how does the journal app differ from the mobile journal websites?

An app, short for application, is a piece of software that must be installed on a specific device, such as iPhone or iPad. The APS Journals app is only available for iOS devices, and must be downloaded from the iTunes App Store. The app provides certain features designed for an optimal reading experience, such as fast-scrolling and figure views. It allows you to bookmark your favorite articles and cache them for later, offline reading.

The mobile journal websites are mirrors of our full journal websites, optimized for viewing on mobile devices. The mobile websites can be viewed by any device with a web browser. They provide full search functionality across all issues of a journal, and access to our complete archives, including legacy content.

What devices does the journal app work on?

iPads (1,2,3), iPhones (iOS 4.2 or later), and iPod touch.

ACCESS QUESTIONS

I am not a member or a subscriber. Can I purchase the articles?

You cannot purchase articles individually through the app. To get access to full text content, you will need a subscription; you may acquire one by applying for APS membership or purchasing a non-member individual subscription.

Top

Are articles available to institutional subscribers? How do we access them? Can I access content through my institution’s network?

For institutional subscribers, authentication is by IP address. If you access the site from within a subscribing institution’s IP range, you will not need to enter a username or password.

Top

I am an individual subscriber. What is my login?

This is the same login you would use for the regular Journal website.

Top

Why do I get a message that my login is incorrect?

Passwords are case-sensitive; make sure that you are typing your password in the correct case.

If you are still having problems, try to clear the cache (Under “Settings”->”Cache Management”, tap on “Clear Cached Data”). Then try to re-enter your username and password.

If this does not work, please contact APS Subscriptions

I’m getting a message instructing me to authenticate. What do I need to do?

If you have just installed the app on your iPhone and iPad, you will need to authenticate your device to access full text content, because full text content is only available to APS Members and Journal subscribers.

If you are trying to access content for the first time, you may see a pop-up screen prompting you to authenticate. If you do not see this pop-up screen, tap on the Settings icon (a gear-shaped icon in the upper right corner), then tap “Authorize This Device”

USAGE QUESTIONS

I’ve started the app, but I do not see the table of contents (TOC). Where is it?

Tap on the journal cover image to bring up the TOC. On the iPad version, the TOC appears on the left side of the screen; on the iPhone, it takes up the whole screen.

Top

I re-installed my app and only the last few issues are showing. What happened to the previous issues?

When you first install the app, you only have access to the past 3 months' worth of issues. As new issues are published, their TOCs are automatically downloaded and added to the app. When you view a specific article, the text of that article is cached on your device. Over time, your device will accumulate an archive based on what you have viewed and read.

When you delete the app from your device, your cached articles are deleted as well. If you later you re-install the app, it will again download only the last 3 months's worth of TOCs, starting from the date of your most recent installation.
