Model Systems for the Study of Integrative Physiology: The Rebirth of Translational Biology

The use of animal models to understand basic physiology and gain insight into the mechanisms of human disease has led to many critical discoveries that have impacted both animal and human medicine. Modern methodologies have further expanded the role of animal models in integrative physiology. The Editors of AJP-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology extend an invitation to submit original research articles related to the topic Model Systems for the Study of Integrative Physiology: The Rebirth of Translational Biology. The goal of this Call is to highlight past research successes using animal models as well as current innovations that extend the understanding of physiology and pathophysiology through use of animal models.

Papers submitted should address topics such as, but not restricted to, the following:

  • Translational insights from small and large animal models of human disease including pregnancy, fetal development and programming, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases.
  • Integration of systems biology and –omics to systems physiology, emphasizing the application of new molecular level inquiry to the understanding of physiological mechanisms and processes.
  • Small and large animal models of human disease to test efficacy of intervention strategies
  • Identification of strengths and weaknesses in current small and large animal models of human disease to improve understanding and translation
  • Reviews highlighting successful translation of discoveries in small and large animals to human treatment or disease management;
  • Failures in translation of animal studies to humans due to limitations in models or methods

All manuscripts accepted from this Call for Papers will be included in a unique online article collection further highlighting this important topic. The article collection may also include specially commissioned review articles related to the topic. Dr Janna Morrison (University of South Australia) will serve as the Guest Editor for this Call and will be assisted in that role by Associate Editor Dr. Maureen Keller-Wood.

Manuscripts should be submitted online via eJournal Press. During the online submission process, under the “Keywords & Special Sections” tab, please use the “Category” drop-down menu and select “Call for Papers: Model Systems for the Study of Integrative Physiology: The Rebirth of Translational Biology”. Manuscripts will undergo normal peer review as they are received. Accepted manuscripts will be published online as they are accepted. Articles published from this Call for Papers will be highlighted with a special Call for Papers banner at the time of publication.

Manuscripts can be submitted anytime, but to be eligible for inclusion in this Call for Papers, manuscripts must be submitted by September 30, 2017.
