Novel Mechanisms of Myocardial Ischemia, Ischemia - Reperfusion, and Protection by Myocardial Conditioning

Associate Editor Fabio Recchia, and Guest Editors Dr. Nikolaos G Frangogiannis and Dr. Petra Kleinbongard, along with the editorial team of AJP-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, invite submission of original research and short reviews on the cellular effectors and molecular signals responsible for injury and repair in myocardial ischemia in the presence or absence of reperfusion, and on mechanisms of cardioprotection associated with myocardial conditioning. 

Myocardial ischemia is implicated in a wide range of clinical conditions, including myocardial infarction, ischemic cardiomyopathy, and chronic heart failure. Prolonged myocardial ischemia triggers cardiomyocyte death, by activating signaling cascades that lead to apoptosis and necrosis. Although timely reperfusion salvages cardiomyocytes and accentuates the reparative response, it may also cause distinct forms of myocardial injury, including reversible pathology (such as reperfusion arrhythmias and myocardial stunning), and irreversible pathology (such as microvascular obstruction and lethal cardiomyocyte injury). In addition to effects on cardiomyocytes, ischemia and reperfusion also exerts profound effects on non-cardiomyocyte populations, activating cardiac macrophages and other immune cells, and promoting phenotypic alterations in fibroblasts, pericytes and cells of the coronary vasculature. A wide range of pharmacologic compounds and non-pharmacologic interventions, such as the different types of ischemic conditioning have been reported to protect the heart from ischemic injury. Implementation of these strategies in the clinic remains challenging, highlighting the need for additional mechanistic basic science and translational research. 

The editors welcome submission of manuscripts exploring the molecular signals and cellular response implicated in injury and repair following myocardial ischemia in the presence or absence of reperfusion. Studies dissecting signaling cascades involved in conditioning-mediated cardioprotection are also invited.

We will consider both original research articles and review articles. For review articles only, authors should email the editorial office ( a pre-submission inquiry including a working title, author and affiliation list, abstract and brief outline of the content for approval by the editors.

All manuscripts accepted from this Call for Papers will be included in a unique online article collection to further highlight the importance of this topic. The article collection will also include specially commissioned Review articles on the topic.
