Cardiac Regeneration and Repair

Associate Editor Dr. Ronglih Liao and Guest Editors Dr. Zamaneh Kassiri and Dr. Stefan Frantz, along with the editorial team of AJP-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, invite submission of original research and short reviews on Cardiac Regeneration and Repair.

In a damaged heart, regeneration and/or repair of the myocardium would be the ultimate therapy. Repair of the damaged heart can be through targeting the various cells types present in the myocardium, optimizing the cardiac coronary network or repairing the electrical circuits in the heart. The aim of this call for papers is to highlight novel mechanisms or approaches in reversing or preventing further damage to the heart muscle or the myocardial vasculature by a better understanding of basic mechanisms and support of cardiac regeneration and/ or repair. Original research manuscripts on novel molecular and cellular mechanisms, cell-cell interactions, cell- or gene-based therapies, exosomes and non-coding RNA, as well as biomaterial tissue transplant approaches will be highly suitable for this special issue. We encourage submission of comprehensive studies where in vitro findings are complimented with in vivo (and/or ex vivo) approaches, as well as translational perspectives.

We will consider both original research articles and review articles. For review articles only, authors should email the editorial office ( a pre-submission inquiry including a working title, author and affiliation list, abstract and brief outline of the content for approval by the editors.

All manuscripts accepted from this Call for Papers will be included in a unique online article collection to further highlight the importance of this topic. The article collection will also include specially commissioned Review articles on the topic.

All manuscripts should be submitted online at

During the online submission process, under the "Keywords & Special Sections" tab, please use the "Category" drop-down menu and select “Call for Papers: Cardiac Regeneration and Repair."

Manuscripts will undergo normal peer review as they are received. Accepted manuscripts will be published online as they are accepted. Articles published from this Call for Papers will be highlighted with a special “Call for Papers” banner on the article PDF, as well as inclusion in the “Call for Papers: Cardiac Regeneration and Repair” online article collection at time of publication.

Manuscripts must be submitted by February 1, 2018 to be eligible for inclusion in this Call for Papers. If you have any questions please contact Kara Hansell Keehan, Executive Editor, via email at
