Call for Papers: Advances in Cardiovascular Geroscience

Guest Editor Dr. Peter Rabinovitch, Dr. Vincenzo Lionetti, and Associate Editor Dr. Zoltan Ungvari, along with the editorial team of AJP-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, invite submission of original research articles related to the understanding of the complex interactions between underlying molecular and cellular processes of aging and susceptibility to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

The population in the Western world is aging at an unprecedented rate. The substantial increase in life expectancy is associated with significant age-related cardiac, arterial and microvascular disease burdens on younger generations. This special call for papers is aimed at better understanding the relationships among the processes of aging, age-related cardiovascular pathologies, and the pathogenesis of various chronic diseases and disorders of the heart, brain, eye, kidney and skeletal muscle. It also focuses on novel approaches to promote successful cardiac, arterial, and microvascular aging to improve the health of the world’s aging population.

We welcome manuscripts focusing on specific mechanisms that intersect aging and chronic cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease pathways, including chronic low-grade inflammation, macromolecular damage, oxidative-nitrative stress, maladaptation to cellular and molecular stresses, impaired stem cell function and regeneration, alterations in proteostasis, epigenetic dysregulation, impaired mitochondrial function and cellular metabolism. We are especially interested in manuscripts developing innovative strategies to improve cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health-span. Authors are also encouraged to submit manuscripts focusing on the role of vascular mechanisms in the pathogenesis of age-related diseases of the central nervous system (including neurodegenerative diseases, stroke and vascular cognitive impairment). We welcome submission of studies using a variety of experimental approaches, including in vivo studies, and investigations using isolated tissue preparations and cultured cells.

We will consider both original research articles and review articles. For review articles only, authors should email the editorial office ( a pre-submission inquiry including a working title, author and affiliation list, abstract and brief outline of the content for approval by the editors.

All manuscripts accepted from this Call for Papers will be included in a unique online article collection to further highlight the importance of this topic. The article collection will also include specially commissioned Review articles on the topic.

All manuscripts should be submitted online at

During the online submission process, under the "Keywords & Special Sections" tab, please use the "Category" drop-down menu and select “Call for Papers: Advances in Cardiovascular Geroscience.

Manuscripts will undergo normal peer review as they are received. Accepted manuscripts will be published online as they are accepted. Articles published from this Call for Papers will be highlighted with a special “Call for Papers” banner on the article PDF, as well as included in the “Call for Papers: Advances in Cardiovascular Geroscience” online article collection at time of publication.

Manuscripts must be submitted by September 30, 2017 to be eligible for inclusion in this Call for Papers. If you have any questions please contact Kara Hansell Keehan, Executive Editor, via email at
