Helen M. Tepperman
teppermanHelen M. Tepperman, 95, passed away in Oakland, CA on September 2, 2012.  Until her retirement in 1985, she was Professor of Pharmacology at the SUNY Upstate Medical Center. After receiving her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Mt. Holyoke College in 1938, she received her PhD in Physiological Chemistry from Yale University Medical School in 1942.  She served as a Research Associate at the Yale Aeromedical Unit from 1943-44 and as a Research Associate at the Army Medical Research Laboratory in Edgewood, MD.  In 1946, she and her husband, Dr. Jay Tepperman, moved to Syracuse to take positions at the Syracuse University College of Medicine.  The Teppermans  established a lifelong collaboration in their research, co-authoring a large number of papers, mentoring students and post docs and training medical students.  They also co-authored a textbook, Metabolic and Endocrine Physiology, the Fifth Edition of which was published in 1986.  Helen served as a consultant for NIH, as Chair of Section N (Medical Sciences) of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and organizer of a AAAS International Symposium.  She received honorary degrees from Mt. Holyoke College, from SUNY and also received the Wilbur Cross Medal from Yale University, awarded to outstanding graduates of their graduate school. Helen was an active member of the Syracuse community from the PTA to the Girl Scouts to the Friends of Chamber Music to the local Mt. Holyoke Alumni Club.  She was also active in the Syracuse chapter of Peace Action.  After retiring from the Medical School, she spent 22 years as a volunteer for the Syracuse Museum of Science and Technology.  She was very involved in programs focused on literacy and tutored many students in English as a Second Language. She was an avid swimmer, cross country skier and cook.  She and Jay moved to Oakland in 2002, where she continued her literacy volunteer work.  In addition to her husband, she is survived by their children, Jean Tepperman (Henry Norr), Katherine Elder (Richard, d.), and James Tepperman, their grandchildren, Carolyn Norr, Sarah Norr, Samuel Tepperman-Gelfant, Elizabeth Meckes (Mark), and Sarah Elder (Molly Eigen), and their great grandchildren, Juliette Meckes, Peter Meckes and Oliver Norr.
