SPENCER M.D., Richard P. Richard P. Spencer, age 81, of Bloomfield, passed away on March 14, 2011. He was the son of the late David and Frances Fried Spencer and beloved husband of Gwendolyn W. Spencer. He is survived by his daughter Carolyn R. Spencer of Ann Arbor, MI as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughters Jennifer H. and Priscilla J. Spencer and sister Linda A. Spencer. Born in New York City on June 7, 1929, Dr. Spencer graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1947 and Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College in 1951. He began his medical studies at Dartmouth Medical School and finished them in 1954 at the University of Southern California. Dr. Spencer did his medical internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, followed by 26 months of active duty in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps. On April 7, 1956 he married Gwendolyn Williams and she survives him. Dr. Spencer's love of learning continued as he earned his Ph.D in Biochemistry from Harvard University in 1961. He then served on the faculty of the University of Buffalo and Yale University Medical Schools. Beginning in 1974 Dr. Spencer served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Connecticut Medical School, starting the Nuclear Medicine Residency Program there and sustaining it for 32 years. He was known for his service, dedication and devotion to teaching, research and clinical practice in the field of Nuclear Medicine. During his lifetime he had more than 900 scientific publications and nine books. He was a frequent speaker concerning his work and research. There are no calling hours. A funeral service will take place on April 16, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Hartford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to McLean Hospice, 75 Great Pond Rd., Simsbury, CT 06070 or the Duncaster Foundation for the Caleb Hitchcock Entertainment Fund, 40 Loeffler Rd., Bloomfield, CT 06002. The family wishes to thank the staff at Caleb Hitchcock and McLean Hospice for their wonderful care of Dr. Spencer. Molloy Funeral Home, West Hartford has care of arrangements.
