Robert R. Smeby, age 88, of Trumbull Twp., died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 18, at his residence, where he has lived since 1988, coming from Willoughby Hills.
He was born Dec. 24, 1926 in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Rudolph P. & Nellie (Smith) Smeby and grew up in Mt. Prospect, IL where he went through scouting and became an Eagle Scout. At age 17 he joined the U.S. Navy and was a radioman stationed outside Shanghai during World War II.

He attended Blackburn College, earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana campus and earned his MS and Ph.D in Biochemistry from University of Wisconsin. He worked a short time for Reynolds Tobacco in North Carolina and Miles Laboratory in Elkhart, IN then spent 28 years at the Cleveland Clinic before retiring. He gained Emeritus status with both Sigma Xi and the American Chemical Society.
He served as a Scoutmaster in his younger years, served on the Willoughby Hills Recreation Commission and the Trumbull Twp. Zoning Board.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years whom he met at the University of Illinois, Patricia R. (Dowling) Smeby, whom he married on June 10, 1950 in Decatur, IL. Survivors also include four sons, Eric of Millersburg, Patrick of Painesville, Alec of Raleigh, NC & Darrick (Jennifer Brotherman) of Mansfield, TX; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a half-brother, Alan (Sharee) Smeby of Rochester, MN.
