David F. Opdyke

Dr. David F. Opdyke, 85, died at home in Basking Ridge, NJ on April 2, 2001. A memorial service will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church, Meeting House Lane, Mountainside, NJ at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 7, 2001.

Dr. Opdyke, born in Montpelier, Ohio, graduated from Heidelberg College in 1937 and received his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1942. From 1939 to 1941 he was a research staff member of the Carnegie Institution of Washington in Cold Spring Harbor, NY. After faculty appointments at Indiana University and Western Reserve Medical Schools, he became a research investigator at the Merck Institute for Therapeutic Research, Rahway, NJ from 1951 to 1956.

In 1956 Dr. Opdyke was the first faculty member appointed at the newly founded Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry (now UMDNJ-Newark). He served as Professor, Chairman of the Physiology Department and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs before retiring in 1982.

Dr. Opdyke also held Visiting or Adjunct Professor appointments at East Carolina University Medical School, Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine (Surabaya, Indonesia) and the Faculty of Medicine, University of Singapore. He was also a summer research investigator at the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine, from 1969 until 1982. Dr. Opdyke was the author or co-author of over 100 scientific articles related to the heart and circulation and served as review editor on several scientific journals.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Rivenburgh Opdyke, a son, David W. Opdyke of Middletown, NJ, a daughter, Nancy Little of Plainfield, NJ and two grandchildren.
