Applying for the Fellowship

Interested students and research hosts should download the Host Application Instructions and Student Application Instructions as well as the FAQ document (see Resources below). It is important for applicants to read ALL of the application information on this page and in the application document and follow the instructions carefully. Incomplete applications, including applications where students do not meet the criteria will not be reviewed.

Applications can ONLY be submitted online through the APS Online Awards Application System (see link below). The application deadline is February 1 each year and award recipients are notified by April 1.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must have an over-all GPA of >3.0 (0-4.0 scale).
  • Applicants must be enrolled, full-time undergraduate students at the time of application. Students should have at least 9 calendar months of previous laboratory research experience, peer reviewed publications, abstracts and presentations at national meetings.
  • Applicants must be an APS member or join APS at the time of application.
  • The laboratory host must be an APS member in good standing. Looking for an APS member research lab to work in? Click on “Selecting Your Research Host” under Resources to find a list of interested research hosts in various locations.
  • Previous UGSRF awardees are encouraged to apply for the UGREF award as long as they meet the eligibility criteria. Students cannot apply for the UGREF award and the UGSRF award concurrently. Previous UGSRF awardees can only receive the UGSRF award once. Previous UGREF awardees are not eligible for additional years of funding.
  • For additional information about eligibility and benefits, follow the “Summer Research Programs” link under Resources.

Selection of Participants

Complete applications will be reviewed and awardees selected by the APS Career Opportunities in Physiology Committee. Decisions will be final. Selection of participants is based on the following parameters: potential impact of the fellowship on the student’s career development, academic merit, student’s understanding of the research project, socioeconomic issues, significant student involvement in research, research environment and funding, proposed interactions with research host and others in the lab, letters of recommendation, and quality of both student and research host application. Special consideration is given to applicants whose socioeconomic background, access to educational opportunities, and other life experiences suggest that they would especially benefit from this type of program. Applications by students from institutions with few or limited research opportunities are especially encouraged.
