APS/ACDP Medical Physiology Learning Objectives Project
The Medical Physiology Learning Objectives Project is an ongoing program of the American Physiological Society (APS) and the Association of Chairs of Departments of Physiology (ADCP). The learning objectives are designed for use in medical physiology instruction and are organized around nine physiology disciplines. The 2000 edition of the Objectives was developed by a team led by APS President L. Gabriel Navar, Tulane University School of Medicine, ACDP President Mordecai P. Blaustein, University of Maryland School of Medicine, and Robert G. Carroll, East Carolina University School of Medicine. Writing teams for each disciplinary section included members of ACDP and of the related APS disciplinary Section. The APS Teaching Section provided coordination, objective templates, and pedagogical support. In both 2006, 2010, and 2012, Drs. Carroll and Navar led a team of authors who revised sections of the objectives.

A description of the project, including the rationale and methodology is included in Dr. Carroll’s paper, “Design and Evaluation of a National Set of Learning Objectives: The Medical Physiology Learning Objectives Project” (see link below). A list of participating authors and the updated project timeline is linked below, as well.

The objectives are available in as a PDF file downloadable from the APS Archive of Teaching Resources (see link below). Comments on the objectives can be posted at the Archive, as well. Objectives for each area of physiology are also provided as web pages (see navigation at left) with links to associated teaching resources in the Archive.
