Applying for the Fellowship
Undergraduate students apply for the STEP-UP program through a central online application system at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. The application site opens in the fall (typically November) and accepts applications until January/February the following year (see link below).
Applicants are selected for all STEP-UP program sites from this pool based on the criteria listed at the NIDDK STEP-UP website and are assigned to one of the Coordinating Centers.
Coordinating Centers work with students to select a research host for the summer. APS has many physiologists working on NIDDK-related research areas who are eager to host a STEP-UP Fellow each year. In 2012, more than 70 APS members requested to host the 25 APS STEP-UP Fellows!
