This program is designed to encourage highly qualified women, racial/ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, and other individuals who traditionally have been underrepresented in science to pursue professional careers in physiological/biomedical sciences. From 1987 - 2012 this program was supported by grants from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. Specifically the program:
- Provides travel fellowships to underrepresented students and faculty members at Minority Access to Research Career (MARC) and Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS)-eligible institutions to attend the annual spring meeting, Experimental Biology. This four- to five-day meeting is attended by approximately 12,000 scientists annually. The meeting serves as a forum for interactions between physiologists and scientists from other areas of experimental biology.
- Provides travel fellowships to underrepresented students and faculty members at Minority Access to Research Career (MARC) and Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS)-eligible institutions to attend the conferences of the APS. These meetings are focused on a specific physiology topic and occur in an informal setting, allowing for greater interaction between the students and scientists at the meeting. The meetings range in length from three to five days.
- Provides travel fellowship recipients an opportunity to attend a large variety and number of symposia, workshops, tutorials, and slide and poster sessions, and to interact with leading scientists in the field of physiology.
