Do you want to...?
Improve your teaching skills at all levels?
Reach out to the next generation of minority scientists?
Participate in outreach activities to K-12 students and teachers?
Become more comfortable talking about physiology careers?
If so, consider applying to be an APS K-12 Minority Outreach Fellow. This program seeks to foster communication between minority graduate and postdoctoral students and middle/high school minority life sciences students. Program activities include year-long outreach fellowships for senior graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to visit K-12 classrooms, help conduct teacher professional development workshops, and attend scientific meetings. The fellowship is supported by a grant from the National Institute Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders (NIDDK) at the National Institutes of Health (Grant #R13 DK39306).
What Do Outreach Fellows Do?
The APS-NIDDK K-12 Minority Outreach Fellows make a one-year commitment to the program to:
- Attend the Experimental Biology meeting at the start of their fellowship year to learn about outreach techniques and activities as well as participating in the scientific meeting and Minority Travel Fellows Program;
- Arrange and carry out two visits to minority student classrooms in the course of the year to do both career presentations and hands-on activities ;
- Attend either the SACNAS National Conference or Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students to talk with undergraduate students at the APS exhibit and present the APS awards to undergraduate students for their physiology research work, and
- Attend the Experimental Biology meeting at the end of their fellowship year to help conduct outreach activities for teachers and students as well as participating in the scientific meeting and Minority Travel Fellows Program.
What Does Outreach Fellowship Provide?
Registration and travel costs for both Experimental Biology meetings and the ABRCMS or SACNAS meeting; travel costs, materials, and supplies for two visits to minority student classrooms.
